Pressure grows on HFCs in vehicle air conditioning

A strong signal that hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) coolants will have to be phased out of vehicle air conditioning systems because of their global warming impacts was given by Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström in February. Recent research has shown that the technology will seriously erode emission gains from improvements in vehicle fuel efficiency over the coming years - but the open question is what alternative refrigerants may replace HFCs and how soon.
