Legal action looms over new law on environmental crimes

Controversial legislation requiring Member States to ensure that a wide range of environmental offences are penalised under the criminal law has been published after being adopted by Justice Ministers in late January.1 Both the European Commission and European Parliament may now take legal proceedings against the Council after being excluded from the legislative process.
