Major increase in packaging prosecutions and fines

A total of 57 businesses were prosecuted by the Environment Agency last year for failing to comply with the packaging regulations - almost double the number in 2000. The average fine doubled in 2001 and again last year to more than £8,000, suggesting that magistrates are taking the offences more seriously.
