New groundwater Directive draws near

Initial proposals for an EU groundwater Directive were circulated by the European Commission in March. The main initial obligation on Member States would be to assess the chemical quality of groundwaters using common indicators and set up groundwater monitoring programmes. Most of the current EU statutory requirements for controlling groundwater pollution would be retained - but with new features such as measures to control pollution from contaminated sites.
