Planning permission for Grundon MRF

Grundon has received planning permission for a 40,000 tonnes per year materials recycling facility at its waste transfer station in Leatherhead, Surrey. The £3 million plant should be fully operational in 12 months.

The MRF is supported by the local authority, Mole Valley, one of three district councils in Surrey which joined together in the late 1990s to stop Sita building incinerators at Capel and Redhill. The three - Mole Valley, Tandridge, and Reigate and Banstead - have drawn up their own waste strategy, which has recycling targets higher than those set by the county council.

Sita has failed to win planning permission for the incinerators, while Thames Waste Management failed to get planning permission for an incinerator in Guildford (ENDS Report 324, p 32 ). The decisions have left Sita and Surrey County Council having to reassess their 25-year contract.
