The distances food travels between the producer and the consumer are growing. Fresh produce can clock up thousands of "food miles" before it appears on UK supermarket shelves - yet the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the international transport of these goods by sea and air are not covered by the Kyoto Protocol and are largely unregulated.
