Standby power consumption: The hidden energy agenda
The use of electrical appliances in standby mode accounts for up to 8% of electricity consumption in the UK's homes - and this could double over the next decade with the rapid penetration of digital technology. Substantial energy savings are possible, but the Departments of Industry and Culture have been slow to respond to the energy consumption and emission implications - especially in relation to the biggest potential user, digital television.
