DEFRA baulks at cost of controlling priority pollutants
The cost of controlling the 33 hazardous substances on the new EU list of priority water pollutants could run to £4 billion in the UK and "severely compromise" some industrial sectors, according to a regulatory impact assessment prepared by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. But uncertainty over the costs will remain until the European Commission proposes specific control measures.
