Agency takes stock on role of management systems in regulation

A new project funded by the Environment Agency aims to pin down the possible role of certified environmental management systems (EMSs) in regulation. Results from an earlier trial suggest that the Agency is unlikely to reduce inspection rates for certified firms - but it is expected to give greater prominence to EMSs in its operator risk assessment (OPRA) scheme and in setting regulatory fees.
