Retailers use fridge "crisis" to limit future role in appliance take-back

Electrical retailers led by Dixons have offered to resume their take-back services for fridges if councils assume sole responsibility for contracts with recyclers - and if the appliances are classified as household waste to escape "special waste" controls. If agreed, such a system could set a precedent for dealing with other appliances covered by the proposed EU Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
