DTI wins Whitehall battle over packaging targets

Targets for recycling and recovering packaging waste for 2002 were announced by Environment Minister Michael Meacher on 19 March. They are a victory for the Department of Trade and Industry, which lobbied for a smaller increase than proposed by the Environment Department. A consultation paper on the proposed revision of EU packaging recovery targets followed from the DTI on 20 March, and revealed that it wants the deadline for meeting them moved forward by two years to 2008.
