Tackling a crisis of confidence in ISO14001
A prominent figure in the environmental management system certification world recently argued that ISO14001 is becoming a "farcical irrelevance" to companies. Many, including the Environment Agency, agree that certification is a poor indicator of environmental performance. But others, including the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) and the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), argue that the jury is still out. Efforts are being made to address the variability in certification practices said to lie at the root of the credibility crisis.
