Landfill operators win right to appeal against 'closure notices'

The Government has finally laid regulations before Parliament to implement the EU landfill Directive, within weeks of the key implementation deadline of 16 July. Among the important changes since last summer's draft are that there will now be national dates for implementing some of the technical requirements such as the ban on liquid waste. The Environment Agency has also acquired a new power to serve "closure notices" - open to appeal by operators - on non-compliant landfills.
