Liability for economic loss rises on GM agenda

Many organic and conventional farmers will face significant costs in minimising contamination of their produce if genetically modified crops are commercialised in Europe, a study for the European Commission has concluded.1 The report will accentuate debate on whether there should be explicit liability rules to compensate farmers for losses caused by GM crops - an issue on which the Government will receive independent advice later this year.
