Bill for nuclear liabilities hits £48 billion - and will rise further

Proposals for a new Liabilities Management Authority to oversee clean-up of the UK's civil nuclear liabilities were issued in July.1 The bill facing taxpayers has now increased to £48 billion. The creation of the LMA may shed light on BNFL's murky accounting practices - and could expose the shaky rationale for continued reprocessing and operation of the Magnox power stations.
