Government caves in on nitrates

The Government has bowed to pressure from the farming industry and reduced the size of nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs) to be designated under EU rules. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced that only 55% of England will be designated as NVZs, along with 10% of Scotland. Both figures are well below the minimum previously considered compatible with the EU law.
