Screw turns on US car makers to tackle CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions

An historic bill paving the way to controls on carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles was passed in California at the end of July. The legislation may serve as a model for other US states, provided it survives a legal challenge from car manufacturers - who have meanwhile come under the spotlight in a report by Environmental Defense highlighting their individual contributions to global warming.1
