Earth Summit ends in disillusion

Over 100 world leaders and tens of thousands of people came together for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September but it was not a meeting of minds. Governments, NGOs and businesses emerged as far apart on some crucial issues as when they went in. Agreements were nailed together in some areas close to business - sustainable consumption and production, corporate accountability and chemicals management - but there were few new concrete targets and timetables.
