Government advisors push for non-food crops

The Government should encourage the production of industrial products from crops, including biodegradable packaging made from wheat starch, car parts made from hemp or flax fibres and vegetable-based printing inks and cleaners, according to the first report of an official advisory body.1 But the report fails to provide a robust environmental case for some of the applications, particularly packaging.
