Building firm's hefty fine for packaging offences

One of the highest fines to date for breaches of the 1997 packaging regulations was imposed on a Lincolnshire building firm on 11 October. Jackson Building Centres appeared before Lincoln magistrates to plead guilty to nine offences under the regulations. Despite meeting the qualifying annual turnover threshold, it had failed to register with the Environment Agency or a compliance scheme, take reasonable steps to recover or recycle packaging waste, and furnish a certificate of compliance to the Agency in the three years to 2000.
