Commission backs down on bathing water reforms
The European Commission has drastically watered down its earlier proposals for revising the 1976 EU Directive on bathing water quality.1 It has opted for less stringent microbiological standards than expected, and decided not to extend the Directive to protect recreational waters. The standards are nevertheless tougher than the current limits, and there is a stronger emphasis on bathing water management to protect public health.
