Agency flexes new water pollution prevention powers

More than two dozen "works notices" aimed at preventing or remedying water pollution have been served by the Environment Agency since it gained the power to do so in April 1999. Most of the recipients have been small businesses and farms, and the new powers have proved valuable in dealing with oil and sewage pollution.
