Reshaping the EC's chemicals policy

Proposals for a wide-ranging overhaul of EC chemicals policy were set out in a White Paper by the European Commission on 14 February. The Commission wants to merge the existing systems for evaluating new and older chemicals, with notifications of basic data for 30,000 older substances being submitted by 2012 and a new authorisation system for the most hazardous substances. Greater responsibility will be placed on industry, including downstream users of chemicals, to carry out safety tests and risk assessments.
