Moratorium on new GMOs set to stay despite new Directive

The revision of the EC's existing legislation on deliberate releases of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cleared its final hurdle in February. Further legislative proposals on traceability and labelling of GMOs and environmental liability are expected shortly from the European Commission as it attempts to overcome opposition from several Member States to licensing of new GMOs - but their objections look set to continue.
