Northern Ireland regulators savaged over water pollution

One of the most searing indictments ever made of environmental regulation in the UK was published by the Northern Ireland Assembly on 28 February. Lengthy delays in legislation, official acceptance of widespread illegal discharges and sub-standard regulation of sewage discharges by the public Water Service are among the shortcomings highlighted in a report by the Assembly's Public Accounts Committee.1 The report has also raised an important question about the compatibility of the Crown immunity enjoyed by the Water Service with EC laws.
