The Agency and Health and Safety Executive issued a prohibition notice on a Hartlepool chemical firm on 19 June after a serious incident that caused distress to workers. Baker Petrolite released approximately 1.5 tonnes of oily vapour from an emergency pressure relief vent at its Tofts Farm works. The cloud caused irritation to workers' skin and eyes, and some complained of breathing difficulties. Three were taken to hospital but later released. The notice, issued under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999, forbids the use of certain plant until suitable equipment is installed to prevent future releases.
