Ballooning waste volumes spell trouble ahead

Claims that municipal waste is growing by 3% or more per annum have been reinforced in the latest official statistics, which are sure to have alarmed local authorities facing EC landfill restrictions. However, the long-term trends remain far from clear. Part of the picture is that councils are handling more waste from businesses - and getting better at collecting garden waste.
