Sewage pollution fines for water firms

Wessex Water was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay costs of £598 after sewage overflowed into a tributary of the river Stour in October 2000. The company appeared before Poole magistrates on 11 June to plead guilty to causing polluting matter to enter the river, contrary to section 85(1) and (6) of the Water Resources Act 1991. The discharge occurred from a pumping station after a warning alarm was ignored.
