Testing times for sewage sludge recycling

Spreading sewage sludge on agricultural land is widely held to be the most environmentally beneficial and cost-effective means of disposal. But the practice is under enormous regulatory pressure from new legislation, both within the UK and from Europe. Foot and mouth disease, poor weather and the recent intervention of retailers to enhance safety standards have also impressed on sewerage undertakers the high risks of the practice. Although companies are trying to broaden their disposal options and increase flexibility, there are no risk-free options.
