Phthalate risk assessments fail to allay endocrine disruption fears

Risk assessments conducted under EC legislation have substantially cleared three phthalate plasticisers of causing toxic health or environmental effects. Although the results have been welcomed by manufacturers, they do nothing to allay public fears over endocrine disrupting effects. The compounds are anti-androgenic and have been suspected of causing male reproductive disorders and low sperm counts.
