United Utilities fined for sewer sulphides

United Utilities has been fined £13,000 after pollution from a sewer polluted a Cumbrian estuary. The company appeared before Carlisle magistrates on 26 June. It pleaded guilty to a charge of discharging trade effluent to the Waver estuary other than in accordance with a discharge consent, contrary to section 85(6) of the Water Resources Act 1991.
