Enforcement action

The Environment Agency served an enforcement notice on Edmonton incinerator in north London on 13 September. It requires the operators - SITA subsidiary LondonWaste - to cut down on excessive emissions of carbon monoxide.

In routine checks, the Agency noticed an increase in the number of times the plant exceeds CO limits. In one case the level was four times over the legal limit. The Agency says the incidents had an insignificant effect on air quality.

In July, the Agency wrote to the company asking it to investigate the incidents and propose actions to solve the problems. The company explained that the excessive emissions were caused by oversized waste causing emergency shutdowns. LondonWaste proposed action including better controls on the waste entering the plant.
