Mining firm fined over silt

Miller Mining was fined £2,500 on 14 September after admitting polluting a tributary of the river Trent with silt and mud. Cannock magistrates heard that management failures at the company's Bleak House open cast site were responsible. In May last year, dewatering operations at the site led to the company pumping silt into the watercourse, polluting some 15 kilometres of water course.

Miller pleaded guilty to a charge under section 85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991, was fined and ordered to pay costs of £2,065 to the Environment Agency.
