Toiletries firm fined for island of foam

Wigan-based toiletries manufacturer Chilwood was fined £6,000 on 23 August after creating an island of foam 100 metres long and 3 metres high on a lake at Newton-le-Willows. Wigan magistrates heard that the incident occurred in July last year after a cleaning solution seeped from the foul sewer to surface water drains. The drains emptied into a brook feeding the lake.

Chilwood pleaded guilty to causing polluting matter to enter the watercourse, contrary to sections 85(1) and (6) of the 1991 act. The company was fined and ordered to pay costs of £890.
