Corus ducks clean-up costs as steel sector falls under IPPC
More evidence that companies applying for integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) permits are failing to demonstrate that they have identified the "best available techniques" (BAT) to control pollution has come to light with the submission of applications by steel companies, including Corus. As the quintessential heavy industry with decades of pollution control experience, the sector might have been expected to prepare adequate applications. But facing increasingly dire economic straits, companies are loath to take on expensive improvement programmes.
