Global ban on organotin anti-fouling paints finally agreed
Twenty years after the first findings that organotin anti-fouling paints leaching from ships' hulls were causing serious damage to shellfish, a global ban on the compounds is in sight. A new convention adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on 5 October provides that there should be no new uses of organotin paints on vessels from January 2003.
