Best ever river quality clouded by nitrate increases
The Environment Agency's comprehensive five-yearly survey of river quality has revealed a marked improvement over the last decade, mainly reflecting massive investments in sewage treatment. The survey includes new information on the aesthetic quality and nutrient content of rivers - and shows that nitrate levels have increased despite a fall in fertiliser applications.
