UK gets second European conviction despite bathing water improvements
Over 95% of UK bathing waters passed mandatory EU microbiological standards this summer - the best figure ever. Good results in north-west England got the Government off the hook over a threatened prosecution for breaching the EU Directive on bathing waters. But a second prosecution went ahead, and the UK was found guilty of failing to meet the Directive's standards in 1996 and 1997.
