MAFF ducks targets in sustainability indicators for farming

A pilot set of 36 sustainable development indicators for UK agriculture was published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in February. 1 They reveal a mixed picture, with more environment-friendly farming practised on a small but growing area, but neutral or adverse trends in most other indicators. The exercise has also exposed serious data deficiencies for some indicators, as well as MAFF's continued reluctance to set targets to move agriculture towards sustainability.
