Paper industry faces key decision on GM technology

A strategic decision whether to support the development of genetically modified (GM) trees must be made soon by the pulp and paper industry, according to a report by consultants 3C Associates. 1 Development of the technology is being led by US paper companies, with one expecting to have commercial levels of GM seedlings within six years. But by encouraging substantial investment in GM products before consumer acceptance has been won outside North America, they risk repeating the mistakes made by US grain exporters.
