Self-incrimination and human rights

In an important judgment, the House of Lords has held that investigatory powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 do not offend against national or European principles against self-incrimination. The case concerned potential waste disposal offences, and the result will be welcomed by the Environment Agency. But it will also be of wider application to other environmental regulators who possess similar powers.
