Solutia fined £21,000 for acid spill - but keeps EMAS registration

Chemical manufacturer Solutia UK has been fined £21,000 for a spillage of concentrated hydrochloric acid - the first time a site registered under the EC eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) has been prosecuted for an environmental offence. The Environment Agency chose not to invoke procedures to suspend the site's registration because of Solutia's swift response to the incident.
