Water price hikes in Scotland to pay for investment backlog

Scotland's three water authorities will be allowed to increase their charges by up to 35% next year and 12% across the board in 2001/02, the Scottish Executive announced in January. Though not as high as the increases recommended by the new Water Industry Commissioner (WIC), the price hikes will help begin clearing a massive backlog in spending on drinking water and sewerage inherited by the new administration.
