Agency sees role for EMSs in IPPC

The Environment Agency is experimenting with linking the level of regulatory oversight of industrial processes to externally verified environmental management systems (EMS). It has launched a trial to assess how many of its requirements can be met by EMSs and how to eliminate duplication between the voluntary and regulatory systems. It hopes to reduce burdens on both operators and regulators - but will have to tread carefully if it is to maintain public confidence.
