Direct costs of incidents are tip of iceberg for energy firm

Fines, legal costs and compensation represent a fraction of the total costs of an environmental incident, according to Scottish and Southern Energy's 1999 environmental report. It reveals that the company spends on average £90,000 a year on fines and compensation - but internal and intangible costs such as loss of customers and damage to reputation boost this figure to around £300,000.
