UK refineries "lag behind" on pollution abatement
UK oil refineries do not match up to international best practice in pollution abatement, according to a study for the Environment Agency. 1 "Cost-effective" strategies to reduce the sector's emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides could add £26 million to its annual costs - but meeting EC targets by 2010 might cost £190 million per annum. The sector's tight profit margins suggest that negotiations with the Agency will be fraught.
