Construction firms fined for oil leaks

Barratt Construction was fined £2,000 by Aberdeen sheriff court on 21 January after pleading guilty to polluting the River Ythan with oil. The incident followed a leak of some 600 gallons of diesel from the company's premises in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, into surface water drains. The company's agent told the court that Barratt had employed contractors to clean up the spill, costing £16,000, and improved procedures to prevent a recurrence. The company also donated 10,000 fish to the local fisheries board as a gesture of goodwill.
