Water firms fined for sewage offences

Southern Water appeared before Horsham magistrates on 20 March to plead guilty to polluting a Sussex brook with sewage. The company reported the incident itself in October 1998 which resulted from a control system failure at Billinghurst sewage treatment works. The fault diverted incoming sewage into the storm tanks which overflowed into a tributary of the river Arun. Some 350 fish were killed. Southern was fined £7,500 and ordered to pay costs of £660.
