Scrap industry on alert following smelting of plutonium source

A Sheffield foundry is dealing with the costly aftermath of accidentally smelting a plutonium-238 source. The incident followed the discovery in March of a uranium rod at a site in Staffordshire - and calls from local authorities for urgent action to deal with what they predict could be "hundreds of thousands of tonnes" of radioactive metal entering the recycling chain.
