Southern councils move ahead on recycling

MORE THAN 30 local authorities in England had household waste recycling rates above 17% in 1998/99 compared with ten in 1995/96, according to figures from the Audit Commission. 1 Meanwhile, the latest data reported by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) indicate that the recycling rate in England and Wales rose to 9.5% in 1998/99 - still well short of the Government's 25% target for 2005. 2
